JOHNNY APPLESEED BARS 
1 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 1/2 c. uncooked oats
2/3 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 c. melted shortening
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 c. chopped pecans
2 c. thinly sliced peeled apples

Mix and sift flour, salt, soda and cinnamon. Add oats, sugar, shortening, egg and vanilla; beat until smooth. Press half of dough in bottom of a greased 9 inch square baking pan. Sprinkle pecans over dough and arrange apple slices over pecans.

Roll remaining dough between 2 sheets of wax paper to form a 9 inch square. Remove top sheet of paper; place dough over filling. Remove other sheet of paper. Press dough around edges. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes at 350 degrees. When cool, sprinkle with confectioners' sugar. Makes 18 bars.
