FRUIT CAKE 
1 1/2 c. raisins
1 c. dates
2 c. sugar
2 c. boiling water
5 tbsp. shortening
3 c. flour
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. chopped nuts
1 c. candied fruit

Place dates, raisins, sugar, water and shortening in small pan and simmer gently 20 minutes; cool. Sift flour once before measuring. Sift flour, soda, cinnamon, cloves and salt together. Stir into cooled mixture.

Add nuts and mixed candied fruit with flour. Pour into greased pans lined with wrapping paper and waxed paper. Bake 1 1/2 hours in slow oven (300-325 degrees).
