DATE SQUARES 
1 3/4 c. oatmeal
1 1/2 c. flour
1 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 c. butter

Mix dry ingredients together and work in the butter. Pack half the mixture in the bottom of a 9 x 9 inch pan. Cover with date filling and add the remaining crumb mixture on top. Press down well.

DATE FILLING:

3/4 c. dates, chopped
1 c. sugar
1 c. water
3/4 c. nuts, chopped

Boil dates, sugar and water until thick. Remove from heat and cool. Add nuts. Bake 40 minutes at 375 degrees. Cut in squares. Approximately 40.
