Steam a large head of cabbage for 5 minutes for easier separation of leaves.
Mix together: 1 1/2 lb. ground beef 1 egg, beaten whole Chopped bell pepper Chopped onion 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. pepper (If desired, bread crumbs can be added to give mixture more body)
Take a little of the above mixture, roll into cabbage leaves separately, and hold together with toothpicks. Place bacon grease (or Crisco or any other) on bottom of deep pan and place cabbage rolls in the pan. Pour tomato juice (one can should be sufficient) and one can of whole tomatoes over top. Place 3 or 4 strips of bacon over this. When hot, cover pan and turn flame down very low. Cook about 2 hours.
Note: From time to time, uncover pan and see that juice hasn't boiled away. More tomato juice can be added if seems too dry. Serves 4-6 people.
