$500 RED CAKE 
1 1/2 c. white sugar
1/2 c. Crisco
2 1/2 c. cake flour
1 c. buttermilk
2 oz. red color
2 tbsp. cocoa
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda, dissolved in
1 tbsp. vinegar

Cream white sugar and Crisco. Add alternately: cake flour and buttermilk. Make paste with: red color, cocoa, salt, vanilla and baking soda which has been dissolved in vinegar. Add above paste to the batter. Bake in two layers 20 minutes at 350 degrees. After cake is cooled, cut two layers with thread to make four layers.

FILLING:

5 tbsp. flour
1 c. milk

Cook flour and milk until thickened. Cream the following: 1 c. butter 1 tsp. vanilla

Mix flour mixture to cream mixture and spread on cake between layers. Frost with 7 Minute Frosting or Confectioners Sugar Frosting.
