1/2 c. butter 1/2 c. brown sugar 3/4 c. granulated sugar 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1 egg 2 c. flour 1/4 tsp. salt 7 1/4 oz. pkg. cut up dates 1 c. chopped nuts 1/4 tsp. baking soda Cream butter (oleo) add brown sugar and 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, vanilla and egg. Beat until light. Add sifted flour, soda and salt. Chill until firm enough to roll. FILLING: Cut date in pieces, bring to boil with remaining sugar and 1/3 cup of water. Simmer 5 minutes stirring often, add nuts. Cool. Half dough, roll each half on floured waxed paper into 9 x 12 inch rectangle. Spread with filling, roll up tightly from end. Wrap in paper, chill overnight. Slice 1/8 inch thick. Bake in moderate 370 degree oven for about 10 minutes. |
