1 c. raisins
2 c. water
2 tbsp. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg

Simmer raisins with the 2 cups water until 1 cup of liquid remains; set aside and cool. Cream shortening with sugar; add raisins and liquid. Add flour, soda, spices and beat until well blended. Bake in greased 8" square pan at 325 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes or until cake tests done with a toothpick. Serve plain or glaze with thin icing of confectioners' sugar and water.
