Chocolate Cake from Scratch - Easy!

I mixed all the ingredients and blended them thoroughly. I put the mix in a 9x13 greased and floured insulated (does it matter?) pan at 350°F for 35 minutes, perfectly done and nice texture! I frosted it with the recipe on the Coco can. Everybody raved about how good it was! As easy as a "store bought" mix and really chocolately!

I have looked everywhere for a chocolate coffee cake recipe and I had basically given up. I found this recipe and I decided to try it substituting the 2 cups of hot water for 2 cups of coffee and it turned out to be a pretty awesome coffee cake recipe as well!

There was nothing in the house except for raw ingredients; thought I'd make a cake since I was tired of bouillon. Turned out delicious, and it was in fact really easy! This was my first time making a cake. EVER. Used frosting recipe from Hershey's Cocoa box and added some dark chocolate sprinkles that we happened to have. So yummy, and I don't even like chocolate that much!

NOTE: I made it vegan-friendly by substituting flax seed for eggs. Worked like magic. Gave some to my vegan friend, who was so happy to eat something sugary as there aren't too many vegan deserts and she doesn't cook much herself. Overall, SUCCESS!

I didn't prepare this cake yet, but do the shortening tbsp's need to be rounded??

This was easy and wonderful! Will make again and often. Everyone loved it. Who needs cake mixes? In answer to the question about rounded tablespoons, yes. Use rounded tablespoons or your measurements will be off for this cake. Or use 4 level tablespoons shortening instead of 2 rounded tablespoons if you want.

Was doing some spring cleaning and found i had 4 big bags of flour in the house and i don't bake from scratch or cook with flour, but feel guilty throwing perfectly good things out. So i found this easy recipe. It's baking now. I happend to have all the raw ingredients in the house except for "shortening". What is shortening, is it the white lard looking from from Crisco? I used 2 tablespoons of Margarine instead. Is that the same as shortening or can be substituted? i guess i'll find out when it's done in the oven.

 Cooks.com replies:
Hi Betty,

You can use butter, margarine, Crisco, etc. as the shortening in this recipe.

Hope this helps!
