APPLE DATE NUT CAKE 
1 c. chopped dates
1 c. boiling water
1/2 c. Crisco
1 egg
1 1/2 c. flour
1 c. chopped apples
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. salt

Combine dates, apples and boiling water, and soda; cool. Combine flour and salt. Mix Crisco, sugar, egg and vanilla. Alternately add date and flour mixture to sugar mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes in a 9"x13" greased and floured pan.

TOPPING:

4 tbsp. butter, melted
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 c. coconut & nuts
2 tbsp. milk

Combine all together and cook over low heat until sugar bubbles, spread on hot cake. Place under broiler until slightly brown. Watch carefully.
