ENGLISH TOFFEE 
1 c. butter
1 1/2 c. granulated sugar
1 tbsp. corn syrup
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. ground nuts
5 chocolate bars or sm. pkg. chocolate

In heavy saucepan melt 1 cup butter. When it is melted, add 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar, 3 tablespoons of water, and one tablespoon of corn syrup. Place candy thermometer in mixture. Stir occasionally and cook until mixture is 300 degree Fahrenheit. Remove from heat and quickly stir in 3/4 cup ground nuts (the recipe calls for almonds, but I frequently use pecans or walnuts).

Pour onto lightly greased foil or waxed paper. Wait five minutes and put chocolate (chocolate chips or chocolate bar) on top - the heat of the candy will melt the chocolate - smooth the melted chocolate and sprinkle 1/4 cup of ground nuts on top. Let cool and remove paper or foil from bottom. Break into small pieces and store in airtight container.
