APPLE CAKE 
2 1/2 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. nutmeg
3 c. diced apples
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
6 tbsp. buttermilk (1/3 c.)

Sift dry ingredients in a bowl. Set aside. Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and beat. Add buttermilk to dry ingredients; beat smooth. Add shortening and sugar mixture to dry ingredients. Add apples. Pour into greased 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees about 45 minutes. Add crumb topping before baking.

CRUMB TOPPING FOR APPLE CAKE:

1/2 c. butter = 1 stick, melted
1 c. brown sugar, packed
1 c. flour
Dash of salt
Walnuts (if desired)

Crumble over cake before baking.
