PLAIN POUND CAKE 
1 c. shortening
1/2 c. butter
2 1/2 c. sugar
4 eggs
3 1/2 c. plain flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla flavoring (or lemon extract)

Cream shortening, butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time and beat. Alternate flour, mixed with salt and soda and buttermilk. Add flavoring. Bake at 325 degrees for about 1 1/2 hours. Line tube pan with wax paper (greased).

GLAZE:

1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. hot water

Can add lemon juice. Cook until sugar has dissolved. Pour on cake.
