GERMAN RED CABBAGE 
1 med. size red cabbage, finely sliced
1 lg. onion, chopped
3 tbsp. butter
1 bay leaf
4 whole cloves
2 tbsp. vinegar
1/2 c. water
4 tart apples, peeled & cut in slices
1 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. sugar
3 tbsp. dry red wine (optional)

Brown the onion in butter, add the cabbage and stir until it is slightly browned. Add bay leaf, cloves, vinegar, water, apples and salt. Cover and simmer for about 45 minutes, or until cabbage is tender. Add sugar and wine, then cook 5 minutes longer.
