RUM CAKE 
Baked in a tube pan and not frosted. This cake is rich, moist and "different".

CAKE:

2 1/2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped walnuts
1/2 c. chopped dates
1/3 c. halved maraschino cherries (8 oz. bottle)
1/2 lb. butter
1 c. granulated sugar
2 eggs
Grated peel from 1 lg. orange
1 1/4 c. sour milk or buttermilk

SYRUP:

1 c. granulated sugar
Reserved cherry juice
Juice of 1 lg. orange
1 c. light rum
