OATMEAL GEMS 
1 1/2 c. dark brown sugar
3/4 c. melted shortening
6 tbsp. buttermilk
3/4 tsp. vanilla
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 c. oatmeal

ICING: (Similar to whipped cream)
4 1/2 tbsp. flour
1 c. milk
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. Crisco
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Combine sugar, shortening, milk and vanilla. Mix in sifted dry ingredients. Stir in oatmeal. Shape in 1 inch balls. Place on greased cookie sheet, flatten with bottom of a glass dipped in cold water. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Yield: 5 dozen cookies.

ICING: Combine flour and milk. Cook over low heat until you have a paste-like consistency. Cool. Cream butter and Crisco. Gradually add sugar. Beat EXTREMELY well. Add vanilla and flour paste. Beat. The more you beat the better it is. Put two cookies and icing together to make a sandwich.
