APPLE BARS 
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup shortening
2 1/2 cups sliced apples
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup rolled oats

Sift flour, salt and baking soda. Add brown sugar and oats. Cut in shortening until crumbly. Spread half of mixture into greased 11x7-inch baking dish. Add apples and sprinkle with sugar. Add remaining crumb mixture.

Bake at 350°F for 40 to 45 minutes. Cut into bars and serve warm; or serve cold as a cookie.
