GIANT CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES
1 1/3 c. unsifted all purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 c. (1/2 stick) butter
1/4 c. shortening
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1/4 c. firmly packed dark brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. coarsely chopped walnuts
1/4 c. flaked coconut
1/2 c. (half a 6 oz. pkg.) semi - sweet chocolate pieces

Sift flour, soda and salt onto waxed paper. Preheat oven to moderate (350 degrees). Grease a large cookie sheet. Beat butter, shortening, granulated and brown sugars, egg and vanilla in a large bowl until smooth. Stir in the flour mixture until well blended. Stir in the walnuts, coconut and chocolate pieces. Divide dough into twelve equal parts. Flatten each part to a 3 1/2 inch round on a prepared cookie sheet (I use a floured plastic lid from a small butter tub to measure and make uniform cookies) leaving 1 inch of space between. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 10 minutes or until set. Cool on wire racks.
