Not any type of whiskey! The original and famed Mint Juleps of the Kentucky Derby use Early Times whiskey served in a frosted silver cup.

But who wants one with ET? If you want a smoother MJ, use Woodford Reserve :)

Use Canadian Mist for a "Mist Julep" night. :D

The real julep cup is silver-plated copper. It will ice over due to the heat transfer properties of the two metals. I have a set my mother left me and remember her telling the story.

Mint Juleps made the Ky. Derby way use simple syrup. It is hard for plain sugar to dissolve so you mix sugar and water together, bring it to a rolling boil, take it off the heat then let it cool. The quantity of sugar to water is about (and this is just a guess) 3/4 cup of sugar to a cup of water. I don't measure anymore as I have been making them for so long. So- after it cools, pour about a 1/2 jigger in a Julep cup or a glass as the recipe suggests. Muddle the mint in the sugar water then add cracked ice and Bourbon. I am a Louisville girl so I am very partial to bourbons made in that area. After adding bourbon, stir to mix all ingredients, add a mint sprig and Enjoy to your own satisfaction.
