DATE NUT CHOCOLATE CHIP CAKE 
1 1/2 c. hot water
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. chopped dates
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/4 c. flour
2 eggs
Salt
3/4 tsp. baking soda
6 oz. chocolate chips
1/2 c. nuts, chopped
1/2 c. sugar

Combine hot water, baking soda, dates and let set. Cream sugar and shortening; add flour, eggs, salt and baking soda. Pour into greased 9 x 13 pan. Top batter with sugar, chips and nuts. (Put sugar on first so chocolate chips don't sink in.) Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.
