RED VELVET OR RED RIBBON CAKE 
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs
2 oz. red food coloring
2 tsp. cocoa
2 1/4 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. buttermilk
2 tsp. baking soda
2 tbsp. vinegar

Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs. Make a paste from cocoa and food coloring. Mix it in. Alternate the flour, salt, and buttermilk. Fold in soda, then vinegar. Put in 2 greased layer pans. Bake in 350 degree oven about 30 minutes.

FILLING AND ICING:

5 tbsp. flour with 1 c. milk

Stir constantly while cooking.

1 c. sugar
1 c. butter

Whip thoroughly with the cooked mixture and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Split layers, fill and top with the mixture.
