BUTTERSCOTCH BROWNIES 
1/4 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar, packed
1 egg
3/4 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Melt shortening over low heat (double boiler is good for this). Take from heat and blend in brown sugar and egg. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Blend with first mixture. Add vanilla and nuts.

Bake in 350°F oven for 20 to 25 minutes. Cut while warm.

Serves 16 to 24.
