1/2 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
1 large egg
1 1/2 c. thick unsweetened applesauce
2 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. allspice
1 c. raisins
1/2 c. chopped nuts (if desired)
2 tsp. baking soda in 1/2 c. boiling water

Cream shortening and sugar. Beat in egg. Combine flour, salt, cinnamon, cloves and allspice. Dissolve soda in water and add alternately with flour mixture to egg mixture.

Stir in applesauce. Stir in raisins and nuts.

Bake in preheated 350°F oven for 1 hour in 8 x 12-inch greased pan.
