1/2 c. softened shortening 1/4 c. softened butter 1/2 c. brown sugar, firmly packed 1 egg yolk, reserve egg white 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1 c. sifted flour 1/4 tsp. salt 1 tsp. water Jelly, preserves, nuts Mix together thoroughly the shortening, butter, brown sugar, egg yolk and vanilla. Sift together flour and salt and stir into creamed mixture. Roll in small balls about the size of walnuts. Beat egg white slightly, add water and dip balls in egg white mixture. Roll in nuts. Put in a 375 degree oven for 5 minutes. Remove and make a thumb print and put either jelly, preserves or a nut in the center and put back in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes more. |
