DATE - NUT BREAD 
2 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 c. boiling water
1 lb. pkg. dates
1 tbsp. butter
1 3/4 c. sugar
1 egg
2 3/4 c. flour
1 c. chopped nuts
1 tsp. vanilla

Add soda to boiling water and pour over dates which have been cut in small pieces. Let this mixture stand. Cream butter and sugar, then add 1 egg. Strain water from the first mixture into sugar mixture. Add flour and beat well. Add the dates, nuts, and vanilla. Pour into greased loaf pans. Bake in 350 degree oven for 1 hour. Makes 2 loaves.
