WOWIE CAKE OR DEPRESSION CAKE 
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 cup cocoa
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tbsp. vinegar
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup cold water

Sift first 5 ingredients into ungreased square or round pan. Add the rest and stir smooth. Bake 35 minutes in 350°F oven. Recipe may be doubled for layer cake.

FROSTING:

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
1 cup confectioners' sugar
3 heaping tbsp. marshmallow creme or fluff
1 tsp. vanilla

Beat all together and frost.

We got this recipe many years ago from a friend. My daughter is allergic to eggs. This is a great, moist cake. We actually put the cocoa and baking soda in last then pour the vinegar on top for a chocolate volcano eruption. The children loved it! Also, we no longer sift it as flour is now pre-sifted.

I have been making this cake for 50 years; since I was a child. It is still a family favorite for celebrations or a quick dessert. My siblings make it for their children and grandchildren to enjoy. Making it right now for a coffee break for folks working on our house.
