BEST SQUASH CASSEROLE 
2 lbs. yellow squash
2 lg. onions, chopped
1 1/2 c. water
1 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. sugar
2 tbsp. butter
2 tbsp. flour
1 c. milk
1/2 c. grated American cheese
1/2 c. fine bread crumbs

Put squash, onions, salt, and sugar in saucepan. Cook 20 minutes. Drain, reserving 1 cup liquid. Melt butter in skillet; add flour. Stir until mixture begins to turn brown. Add reserved liquid and milk. Cook to thicken. Put squash and onions in casserole dish. Add sauce mixed with cheese. Sprinkle on bread crumbs and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.
