1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
a few grinds fresh pepper
1 cup milk
1 can tuna, drained
1 can peas, drained
1 slice bread per person, toasted, buttered (opt)

Melt butter or margarine in a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat. Add flour, salt and pepper and stir until flour is slightly browned.

Add drained tuna and peas and heat thoroughly, without boiling.

Ladle over toast on plate or bowl and serve warm.

Grew up in a family of TWELVE. This recipe works great for large families... 8 tablespoons of butter and 8 tablespoons of flour. 3-4 cups whole milk. 2 cans of peas. 3 cans of tuna.... Yummy. I thought my parents made up the recipe. I had no idea that other middle class families were enjoying it also. We were poor and the dishes my mom could make. We never went hungry.

My sister and I were brought up by our grand parents; they were very frugal and we had this at least once a week. My husband and I love it. Still watching the pennies and we are in our seventies. Thanks Cooks.com for bringing back good memories!

My grandmother made this... but she called it "Tuna Fish Gravy". I used to ask her how to make it, but she never measured, so I not figured it out. Thanks... I will make this this week. It was my favorite.

My grandma used to make this all the time! We just called it tuna and peas in a white sauce! She used to make it over potatoes, and I always liked it over crackers. I think I'll make this on the anniversary of her passing, in her honor!

This was an old time favorite that my grandmother & mother used to make. I thought it was a New Englander dish, but it seems it was well known... thank goodness because I lost my mom's recipe for this and now I am dying for an old favorite. Thank you for posting!

I grew up with this as a favorite meal. The only difference was it was made with salmon instead of tuna. Try it!

This is a depression dish from the 1930's. I grew up eating this dish and loved it. The family carried over dishes like this that were favorites during the depression. The orgins of the dish most likely came from a manufacturer written down on their label to increase their sells during that time. It has'nt changed over the years and is an American favorite.

The whole family loves tuna gravy. Its tasty, cheap, fast and so easy! I'm gluten free so I substitute corn starch for flour and serve the gravy on rice. Yummy!

Grew up with creamed tuna, but my mother used Aunt Penny's White Sauce (in a can) and frozen peas and carrots. Served over rice. Great!
