CAKE DOUGHNUTS 
1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 egg
1/2 c. Safflo or other salad oil
1 c. buttermilk or sour milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla
3 2/3 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda

Combine sugar and salt in bowl. Stir in egg, Safflo oil, milk and vanilla. Sift remaining ingredients together and add in 4 or 5 portions to liquid. Mix and turn out on lightly floured surface. Dough should be soft. Roll out 1/2" thick. Cut with floured doughnut cutter. Deep fat fry in Safflo oil heated to brown a cube of bread in 60 seconds. Fry until golden brown, turning.
