BROWN SUGAR COOKIES 
2 c. brown sugar
1 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 tsp. baking soda dissolved in 6 tbsp. boiling water
1 tbsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking powder

Add enough flour to mixture to make soft dough to roll. Roll on floured board and cut with cookie cutters or in squares. Cook at 375 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes. Make filled cookies by rolling dough thinner, placing a teaspoon of jelly or jam on one cookie, cover with another cookie, press edges together and bake.
