MERINGUE PECAN SQUARES 
1/3 c. solid shortening
1 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 unbeaten egg yolk
3/4 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. chopped pecans

MERINGUE TOPPING:

1 egg white
1/2 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1/4 tsp. vanilla

Combine all ingredients, press dough into greased 8 x 12 inch pan. Make topping by beating egg white until stiff and dry. Add 1/2 cup brown sugar gradually, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla and mix. Spread over first layer. Bake in slow 325 degree oven for 30 or 35 minutes. Cool and cut into small squares. Makes about 35.
