BACHELOR'S FRUIT CAKE 
2 c. seedless raisins
1 c. sugar
1 c. hot water
1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. salt

Bring to boiling point and simmer for exactly 6 minutes. Cool to lukewarm then add 1 1/3 cups flour which has been sifted with 1 teaspoon baking soda. Mix well. Flavor with 1 teaspoon vanilla and turn into cake tins, lined with 2 thicknesses of paper. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 1/2 hours. Invert and cool in tin. Store for at least a week before cutting.
