BLACK WALNUT LAYER CAKE 
2/3 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
3 eggs
2 c. all-purpose flour
2 3/4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 c. milk
1 c. ground black walnuts

Cream shortening, sugar and vanilla until fluffy. Add beaten egg yolks and beat thoroughly. Add dry ingredients with milk in a small amount. Add nuts and fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Put batter in two greased 9 inch pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

BLACK WALNUT FROSTING:

2 c. firmly packed light brown sugar
1/2 c. water
1/2 c. light corn syrup
2 egg whites, stiffly beaten
Finely ground black walnuts
