First - line a 9 x 12 inch pan with waxed paper.

Second - Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

1 c. boiling water over
1 c. chopped dates and
1 tsp. baking soda

1 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla

1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/3 tsp. salt

Mix well and add date mixture and 1/2 cup chopped nuts. Mix well and pour into pan you have ready and bake about 25 to 30 minutes in preheated oven at 350 degrees.

ICING:

5 tbsp. brown sugar
5 tbsp. cream
2 tbsp. butter

Boil about 3 minutes, pour over cake and sprinkle 1 cup coconut over cake.
