DATE NUT LOAF 
1 (6 1/2 oz.) pkg. pitted dates
1 1/2 c. boiling water
2 tbsp. fat (Crisco or butter)
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 egg
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. of nut meats
1/2 tsp. lemon extract

Cut the dates in quarters. Add fat. Over this pour the boiling water. Cool, add well-beaten eggs. Sift flour once before measuring. Sift dry ingredients together. Add flour, nut meats and flavoring. Mix thoroughly. Place in greased bread pan (12 x 4 inches). Let stand 15 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. (Longer time may be required, according to the thickness of loaf.)
