COLD OVEN BUTTERMILK CAKE 
1 c. shortening
6 eggs
3 c. plain flour
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. almond extract
3 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream shortening and sugar together. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Add dry ingredients, alternating with milk and flavoring. Bake in a greased tube pan. Place in a cold oven. Turn heat to 300 degrees and bake 1 1/2 hours.
