DUTCH APPLE CAKE 
1 1/2 c. sifted, all-purpose flour
1/3 c. sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. salt
1/3 c. shortening
1 egg, beaten
1/2 c. milk
3 med. apples, peeled, cored & sliced
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
2 tbsp. butter
2 tbsp. maple syrup

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Sift together flour, 3 tablespoons of the sugar, the baking powder and salt. Using 2 knives, cut in the shortening.

Combine egg and milk; add to the dry ingredients. Mix to a soft dough. Spread dough in greased, shallow 8 inch square pan. Place the apples on the dough in rows of overlapping slices.

Mix the remaining sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle on top of the apples. Dot with butter. Bake about 40-45 minutes. Remove from oven and pour maple syrup over the apple topping.
