HAMBURGER - VEGETABLE CHOWDER 
This is very flavorful; I make mine rather thick. It can be frozen.

1 lb. lean ground beef
3 tbsp. butter or oil
2 c. canned tomatoes (1-14 oz. can with juice)
2 med. carrots, sliced
1/2 c. diced celery
1 me.d onion, chopped
2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1 1/2 qt. water
1/3 c. rice, regular long grain

Brown hamburger in oil over medium heat, then add all other ingredients except rice. Cook on low for 1 hour, then add rice. Cook until rice is done; add more water or tomato juice if it is too thick. V8 juice may be substituted for liquid.

Makes 6 servings.
