BASIC BREAD | |
Preheat oven to 400 degrees for 20 minutes before baking. 1/2 c. milk 3 tbsp. sugar 2 tsp. salt 3 tbsp. butter 1 1/2 c. warm water 1 pkg. yeast 6 c. flour Scald the milk; stir in sugar, salt and butter. Cool to lukewarm. Measure warm water, sprinkle in yeast, stir until dissolved. Add lukewarm milk mixture and 3 cups flour, beat until smooth. Add additional flour to make soft dough. Turn out on floured board. Knead until smooth and elastic, 8 to 10 minutes. Form into smooth ball. Place in greased bowl, turning to grease all sides. Cover. Let rise about 1 hour until doubled in size. Punch down. Let rest 15 minutes. Shape into loaves or rolls. Place in greased pan. Let rise in warm place 1 hour. Bake in hot 400 degree oven about 50 minutes or until golden brown. |
