BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLES 
6 lb. cucumbers
1 1/2 c. sliced onion
1 to 2 qt. crushed ice, cubes will do
4 1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. cloves
1/3 c. salt
1 1/2 tsp. celery seed
2 tbsp. mustard seed
3 c. white vinegar

Wash cucumbers thoroughly. Slice unpeeled cucumbers into 1/8 to 1/4 inch slices. Add onions and garlic. Add salt. Cover with ice. Mix thoroughly. Allow to stand for 3 hours. Drain thoroughly. Remove garlic. Combine sugar, spices and vinegar. Heat just to a boil. Add cucumber and onion slices. Heat 5 minutes. Pack loosely into clean, hot pint jars. Adjust lids. Process in boiling water bath for 5 minutes. Makes 7 pints.
