FRENCH ONION CASSEROLE 
butter
8 (3/4 inch) slices French bread
2 lg. onions, thinly sliced and separated into rings
2 tbsp. butter
6 oz. Swiss cheese
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 (5 oz.) can (2/3 c.) evaporated milk
1/4 tsp. pepper

Preheat oven 350 degrees.

Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Set aside.

In large skillet cook the sliced onions in 2 tablespoons butter until tender but not brown, stirring often. Transfer the cooked onions to a 12x9 baking dish. Layer the Swiss cheese over the onions.

In a small bowl combine chicken soup, milk and pepper, stirring well. Pour into baking dish spreading evenly. Layer the bread slices, buttered side up, over the soup mixture. Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
