EASY BAKLAVA
1 lb. filo (strudel dough)
1 tbsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. orange peel, grated
1 lb. walnuts
1 lb. butter, unsalted

NUT MIXTURE:

Chop (fine) or grind nuts, add orange peel, cinnamon and mix.

SYRUP:

1 c. water
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. honey
1 slice orange
1 slice lemon

Boil until syrupy while Baklava bakes (simmer). Start oven at 350 degrees. Melt butter. Butter bottom of 13"x9" pan. Put in a layer of filo (1/2 sheet) and butter generously. Fold over the other 1/2 of sheet and butter. Do this until you've built up 6 1/2 sheets. Sprinkle on nut mixture to cover and put on another 1/2 sheet of filo, butter, fold over the other 1/2 sheet and butter. Sprinkle on more nuts. Do this until you've used up all the nut mixture. Then build up another 6 (1/2 sheets) of filo, or more if you have enough butter. Cut in squares or diamonds before baking. Cut about 3/4 of way through to mark it. Bake 40 minutes. When Baklava comes out of oven pour syrup over all and cut through to bottom. Cool before removing from pan. To keep filo pliable while working with it, cover with a damp towel. A small paint brush works great for buttering filo dough.
