GRANDPA'S FRUIT BARS 
3/4 c. raisins
1/2 c. chopped dates
2 tbsp. orange-flavored liqueur
1/2 c. butter, room temperature
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar, packed
1 whole egg
1 egg, separated
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
Grated peel of 1/2 orange
1 3/4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 c. coarsely chopped nuts
1/2 tsp. water

1. In small bowl combine raisins, dates and liqueur.

2. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

3. In large bowl beat butter, both sugars, whole egg, egg white and vanilla until light and fluffy.

4. Add cinnamon, nutmeg, orange peel, flour, baking soda until thoroughly blended. Add nuts and macerated fruit. Dough will be sticky.

5. Using well floured hands or back of spoon, press dough into foil lined 10 x 15 inch jelly roll pan.

6. Mix yolk and the water. With pastry brush, brush yolk on dough.

7. Bake 20-25 minutes until dough is light golden. Cool 10 minutes, then cut into 1 x 2 inch squares. Yields 75 bars.

I have been looking for this recipe for years. We had an old cookbook when I was a child that included it. The cookbook disappeared. Just like I remembered. Delicious!
