CHOCOLATE-DATE CAKE 
1 c. chopped dates
1 c. boiling water
2/3 c. shortening (butter)
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs, beaten
1 3/4 c. sifted flour
2 tbsp. cocoa
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 pkg. chocolate chips
1 c. nuts

Pour boiling water over dates and stir in shortening. Add sugar, vanilla and eggs. Sift together dry ingredients and add. Spread in 9 1/2 x 13 inch pan and cover with chips and nuts. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes.
