BUTTER COOKIES (CUT OUT COOKIES) 
1 c. butter
1 1/2 c. powdered sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1/4 tsp. salt

Cream butter and sugar gradually until fluffy, add unbeaten egg and vanilla. Beat well. Mix dry ingredients together, blend into cream mixture and chill dough for 5 to 10 minutes or longer, if necessary. Dough should be able to roll out easily. Cut shapes as desired. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 400 degrees for 6 to 8 minutes. Frost and decorate as desired.
