ENGLISH TOFFEE 
1 lb. butter
2 c. sugar
1/8 tsp. cream of tartar
1 c. chopped pecans or walnuts
Chocolate chips or 5 chocolate Hershey bars

Melt butter and sugar over medium heat in heavy saucepan. Add cream of tartar. Stir constantly. Cook until 2 degrees over "soft crack" on candy thermometer. Remove from heat and stir in nuts. Pour on cookie sheet while still warm. Sprinkle chocolate chips or bars over top. Let melt, then spread evenly. Sprinkle with nuts.
