TURTLE BROWNIES
1 (14 oz.) pkg. vanilla caramels
2/3 c. evaporated milk (use 1/3 with caramels and 1/3 with cake mix)
1 box (approximately 18 1/2 oz.) German Chocolate cake mix
3/4 c. softened butter
1 c. nuts (walnuts and/or pecans)
12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate pieces (I use about 9-10 oz. - 12 oz. seems to make it too rich, but it's just a matter of taste)

Combine caramels and 1/3 cup evaporated milk on top of double boiler (can do in microwave). Stir mixture until melted.

Combine cake mix, remaining 1/3 cup milk and softened butter. Blend until mixture holds together. (Sometimes it is like soft crumbs and sometimes it is like very thick cake batter!) Stir in nuts.

Press 1/2 of cake mixture in a greased 13x9 pan and bake for 6 minutes at 350 degrees. Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate pieces on top. Pour melted caramel evenly over top. Crumble remaining mix over caramel and bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes. Cool slightly and cut into bars.

When I press the batter into the pan, I have to wet my hands to do so because the batter sticks to them. It helps!!

Since microwave ovens vary in power, you may need to adjust your cooking time.
