THUMB PRINT COOKIES 
1/4 c. shortening
1/4 c. butter
1/4 c. brown sugar
1 egg, divided
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. finely chopped nuts
Confectioners' sugar frosting, tinted red or green

Cream shortening, butter, sugar, egg yolk and vanilla. Then add flour and salt, mixing well. Roll dough into about 22 balls.

In small bowl beat egg white until frothy. Place nuts in another small bowl. Roll balls in egg white and then nuts.

Place balls on greased cookie sheets. Bake 5 minutes at 375 degrees. Remove cookies from oven and make an indentation in the center of each with thumb. Return cookies to oven and bake another 8 minutes or until lightly browned. When cookies are cool, top each with a thick layer of frosting.
