GERMAN CHRISTMAS BRAID 
1 pkg. dry yeast
2 tbsp. warm water
3/4 c. scalded milk
1/4 c. butter
1/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 egg
3 c. all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 c. butter, softened
1/2 c. sugar
Confectioners' sugar glaze
Candied cherries
Chopped walnuts

Dissolve yeast in very warm water and set aside. Pour scalded milk over 1/4 cup butter and 1/4 cup sugar. Cool milk mixture to lukewarm. Add yeast, egg and 1 1/2 cups flour. Beat until smooth. Add remaining flour and knead until smooth and satiny, about 5 minutes. Put in grease bowl and let rise until doubled. Punch down and divide into 3 parts. Roll each part into rectangle, about 12x17 inches. Brush with soft butter.

Mix 1/2 cup sugar with cinnamon and nutmeg. Sprinkle on dough. Roll each piece tightly and braid. Put on greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Frost with glaze and decorate with cherries and nuts.
