BREAD PRETZELS 
1 pkg. dry yeast, mixed with 1 tsp. sugar
1 egg, beaten with 2 tsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. warm water
1/4 c. melted shortening
4 c. flour
2 tsp. lye
1 qt. boiling water

Dissolve yeast in warm water with 1 teaspoon of sugar. Mix; add egg (beaten with 2 teaspoons of sugar), shortening, salt and flour. Turn on floured board; knead until smooth. Let rise 1/2 hour. Cut in small portions. Roll into ropes with hands to 1/2 inch thickness and 15 inches in length. Form pretzel. Place on cloth; let rise 20 minutes.
