WHITE BUTTERMILK CAKE 
1 c. Crisco
3 c. sugar
2 c. buttermilk
4 c. flour
4 egg whites, beaten stiff
3 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. vanilla

Cream Crisco and sugar. Add a little of the buttermilk and beat until fluffy. Add rest of dry ingredients, alternately with rest of buttermilk. Add vanilla and fold in beaten egg whites. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes. Makes a 3 layer cake. Cool cake for icing.

ICING:

2 c. milk
6 tbsp. flour
2 c. sugar
2 c. Crisco
2 tsp. vanilla

This is a double recipe for the icing.

Mix flour and milk. Cook until thick. Cool. Combine shortening and sugar; beat until creamy. Pour in cooked flour mixture. Stir until creamy. Ice cooled cake.
